Surge Protection Program

S.V.E.C. has a surge protection program to protect members' homes and sensitive electronic equipment from lightning strikes and other types of power surges and spikes. Power surges are sudden powerful increases in voltage, which can damage or destroy household appliances and electronics like computers,  televisions, and telephones. Power surges or spikes can be caused by lightning strikes. They can also be caused by birds, animals and trees interfering with power lines, auto accidents involving utility poles, and appliances cycling on and off in the home.

The meter base surge suppressor offered to S.V.E.C. members is a surge protection device that is installed into the meter base to reduce high voltage spikes and surges before they enter the home. An additional level of protection is provided by a starter kit  of four surge suppressors for use inside the home including one eight-plug receptacle, one single-plug receptacle, one single-plug receptacle with phone and a coaxial cable television protector. This kit is designed to provide a basic level of protection for a household. Specific needs will vary from family to family.  Members enrolled in the program can lease additional surge protectors to suit their individual needs.

The cost of the protection is minimal. Members are charged a one-time installation fee of $120.00 and a monthly charge of $6.00 for a basic package. The installation fee covers the cost for properly grounding your home and installing the protection device.  The member is obligated to participate in the program for a minimum of three years.
